What is a Google Shopping feed?

A Google Shopping feed is the product data Google uses to understand the items a merchant wants to surface across Shopping-related experiences. The useful mental model is not just a spreadsheet upload: source data is processed into products, checked for eligibility, and compared with the storefront customers actually see.

A feed is structured product data

A Shopping feed describes individual offers using attributes such as id, title, description, link, image, price, availability, brand, GTIN, MPN, condition, shipping-related data, and variant grouping where applicable. Merchant Center processes that source and reports issues against the resulting products.

The source can come from a scheduled file, ecommerce platform integration, API, or another supported product data source. What matters operationally is that the processed offer stays accurate and consistent with the page a shopper reaches.

What happens after product data reaches Google

A successful upload is only the first step. Google processes the rows, validates required and recommended attributes, evaluates product and account issues, and determines eligibility by destination and market. An accepted file can therefore still contain products that are limited, pending, or disapproved.

For troubleshooting, compare the source value with Merchant Center's processed value rather than assuming the original file is what Google currently uses.

The attributes most likely to cause practical problems

High-impact problems often involve price, availability, identifiers, images, destination URLs, shipping, and product-page consistency.

  • Stable product ID and variant identity
  • Current price and sale price
  • Availability that matches the storefront
  • Brand, GTIN, and MPN where applicable
  • Working landing-page and image URLs
  • Accurate variant grouping
  • Fresh source updates after catalog changes

Feed quality is an ongoing system, not a one-time setup

Catalogs change continuously. Prices move, stock runs out, promotions start and end, variants are added, and themes or apps can change structured data. Monitoring should therefore watch both source freshness and Merchant Center's processed product state.

CommerceVigil focuses on read-only monitoring: it surfaces direct Merchant diagnostics and lifecycle changes without editing the merchant's feed.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Google Shopping feed the same as a website product page?

No. The feed is structured product data submitted to Google; the landing page is the customer-facing destination and should agree with that data.

Does an accepted feed mean every product is approved?

No. A source can process successfully while individual products still have warnings, limitations, or disapprovals.

Do I need to upload a file manually?

Not necessarily. Merchant Center supports multiple product data source methods, including integrations and APIs.
