How to monitor product feed integration health

Integration health is broader than a successful scheduled job. A healthy product feed integration delivers on time, processes expected products, preserves identity, keeps critical values fresh, and makes failures visible before they become long-running catalog problems.

Define health at each stage

Track the pipeline from catalog source to Merchant Center rather than relying on one green job status. A connector can run successfully while sending fewer products, stale prices, or incorrect variants.

  • Source job completed
  • Delivery or API request succeeded
  • Merchant processing completed
  • Expected product count remained within a reasonable range
  • Critical attributes changed when the catalog changed
  • Rejected products and diagnostics stayed visible
  • Recovery was confirmed after a failure

Watch freshness and volume together

A current timestamp does not prove current data. Compare source modification time, delivery time, processing time, and a sample of high-risk fields such as price and availability. Sudden changes in product count can expose partial exports or filtering errors.

Detect silent degradation

Some of the most expensive feed failures are partial: one market stops updating, a category disappears, or variant children inherit a parent value. Build checks that compare today's processed state with a previous healthy baseline rather than only checking for HTTP or job errors.

Escalate based on impact and persistence

A single transient fetch failure may recover on the next schedule. Repeated failures, expanding disapprovals, or a persistent loss of products deserve faster escalation. Preserve the failure timeline so operators can distinguish recurrence from a one-off event.

How CommerceVigil contributes

CommerceVigil monitors the Merchant side of the integration: processed products, direct diagnostics, lifecycle changes, and supported product-status events. It does not control the upstream ecommerce export, SFTP server, or feed publishing application.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy product feed integration?

It delivers expected data on time, processes correctly, keeps important values fresh, and exposes failures clearly.

Is a successful API response enough?

No. Confirm processed products, counts, values, and diagnostics after delivery.

Can CommerceVigil monitor my upstream SFTP server?

No. It monitors Merchant Center-side outcomes, not the upstream transport service itself.
