Merchant Center missing MPN: what to submit and when

An MPN is a manufacturer-assigned identifier, not a store SKU or a value to invent. Determine whether the exact product or variant has an MPN, then submit it consistently with brand and GTIN guidance.

MPN, GTIN, and store SKU are different

The manufacturer part number identifies a specific product within a manufacturer's catalog. A retailer's SKU, platform variant ID, or supplier row number is not automatically an MPN. Google recommends submitting accurate unique product identifiers when they exist.

Products with an assigned GTIN should use that exact GTIN together with the applicable brand and MPN. Products without a GTIN may rely more heavily on brand and MPN. Requirements vary by product, so read the issue Google reports for the exact offer.

Why MPN data goes missing or becomes incorrect

Catalog imports frequently omit manufacturer fields, map an internal SKU into mpn, or copy one parent value to every variant. Marketplace and distributor exports may also provide their own reference rather than the manufacturer's number.

  • The source catalog has no dedicated MPN field.
  • A feed rule maps SKU or model name into mpn.
  • Variants inherit one parent MPN despite having distinct manufacturer numbers.
  • Punctuation or prefixes differ from the authoritative manufacturer value.
  • An invented placeholder is reused across products.

How to verify the identifier

Start with the manufacturer, packaging, or an authoritative product catalog. Match the exact model and variant, including size, color, capacity, or pack configuration. Compare the source, submitted value, and Merchant processed product rather than relying on the storefront title.

If no MPN was assigned, do not fabricate one. Follow Google's current identifier guidance for that product type and make sure identifier_exists and related attributes, where applicable, represent reality.

Correct the source mapping

Store the verified MPN at variant level, map it to the mpn attribute, and preserve the stable Merchant product ID. Submit the corresponding brand and GTIN when applicable. After synchronization, confirm the processed value and watch the specific issue lifecycle rather than assuming an accepted upload cleared it.

Monitor identifier issues with CommerceVigil

CommerceVigil surfaces Google's identifier diagnostics, affected products, and new, expanded, or resolved changes. It never guesses MPNs from titles and cannot verify manufacturer ownership independently; product matching and traffic context remain deterministic only.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my store SKU as the MPN?

Only if it is genuinely the manufacturer-assigned part number; an internal retail SKU is not a substitute.

Should I invent an MPN when one is missing?

No. Verify the manufacturer data and follow Google's identifier guidance when no MPN exists.

Do variants share an MPN?

Use the manufacturer-assigned identifier for each exact variant; many variants have distinct part numbers.
